The Routes

The Way of Hope is a 48-mile pilgrimage through the heart of Weardale, where landscapes, stories, and sacred spaces invite reflection and renewal. Beginning at the Killhope Lead Mining Museum and the high moors, the route passes Slitt Woods, the Weardale Museum, and the Weardale Railway, before leading walkers to a remarkable chain of churches – from Heathery Cleugh and St John’s Chapel to Eastgate, Stanhope, Wolsingham, Witton-le-Wear, and the ancient Escomb Saxon Church. Methodist and Baptist chapels further tell the dale’s story of faith, before the path culminates at the Auckland Project Faith Museum. Walked in stages or as a full journey, The Way of Hope is both a passage through the dale and a pilgrimage through time, community, and the enduring spirit of faith.

“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage”

Psalm 84.5
